4 Hours in Zurich: A Quick Old Town Walk

We arrived in Zurich the night before our flight home after a Rhine River cruise and several days exploring Lucerne and Switzerland (see our 5-day Switzerland itinerary here). Our family group of seven, who had been traveling together, split up for our flights home, and my husband, daughter, and I spent our last evening exploring Zurich.
Rather than trying to pack in a long list of attractions, we walked over to Old Town and wandered. Three beautiful churches, the Limmat River, a grocery-store picnic, and a little people-watching ended up being a pretty great introduction to the city.
This isn’t a comprehensive Zurich guide—just what we managed to see in a few hours on foot.

Start Your Zurich Visit in Old Town
We walked everywhere in Zurich, from the train station to our hotel and from our hotel to Old Town, which took us maybe 15–20 minutes.
I didn’t have a specific itinerary in mind. I just wanted to see the churches Zurich is famous for, so we headed into Old Town and started wandering.
See Zurich’s Three Main Churches
Fraumünster
Fraumünster’s distinctive copper roof is visible from all over Zurich.
The church sits in a wide-open square with restaurants and cafes nearby, making it a nice place to stop and take in the surroundings.
The courtyard at Fraumünster is open to the public and is a really cool place to wander.
Columns and artwork fill the courtyard. There were hardly any people here when we visited, so we practically had the place to ourselves.
Grossmünster
Grossmünster was under construction when we visited, and I was so disappointed! I really wanted to see the inside and its unique stained-glass windows.
I’d read about the unusual windows, which use thinly sliced natural agate rather than traditional stained glass, so this was one church I was particularly looking forward to seeing.
Unfortunately, I’ll have to save that for another trip.
St. Peter’s
St. Peter’s has one of the largest church clock faces in Europe, measuring more than 28 feet in diameter. The hour hand alone is almost 17 feet long!
There is a clock face on each of the four sides of the tower, so it’s hard to miss them as you’re walking around Old Town.
I also noticed that the number four is written as IIII rather than the more familiar IV on the clock faces. It’s one of those little details I probably wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t read that fact ahead of our visit.
Walk Along the Limmat River
We also saw quite a bit of construction during our visit. A bridge was being replaced and work was underway to deepen the river, so some areas looked a little different than they might on a future visit.
Walking along the river was a neat experience, and different from some of the other Swiss cities we’d visited with rivers running through them. The Limmat is pretty wide, and one thing we really liked about Zurich was seeing locals hanging out everywhere along the water.
It was clearly a big part of the city’s evening rhythm. People were sitting along the river, relaxing on the banks, and even dipping their feet into the water.
I thought Zurich’s public transportation was uniquely photogenic, with trams and other transportation weaving through the streets.
Have a Very Unfussy Zurich Dinner
Keep in mind, this was the last night of our trip, and we’d been eating out quite a bit. During our time in Switzerland, we’d also relied on Coop stores for some easy meals simply because they were convenient and everywhere.
Then we wandered into a grocery store we hadn’t seen before: Lidl.
That’s when things got a bit ridiculous.
We discovered the ready-to-eat section, and it was enormous.
Salads, pasta salads, a pickle/sausage/pea salad, a pretzel bun, cookies, drinks…we could barely carry it all.
We bought considerably more food than we could possibly eat. It was absurd.
We carried our haul down to the river and enjoyed our takeout picnic near a dock area with great views.
What I loved most was watching the young locals sitting along the river and the docks, enjoying the evening with friends. It felt like we were getting a glimpse of everyday Zurich rather than just checking another attraction off our list.
It was such a cool expereince to feel like we were a part of the local vibe, enjoying the sunset along the water.
Spoiler, we did not finish all that food.
Is Four Hours Enough Time for Zurich?
Four hours isn’t enough time to see all of Zurich. But it is enough for a pleasant introduction to Old Town.
Want a little more context as you explore? This 2-hour Zurich Old Town walking tour is an inexpensive way to see the highlights and learn more about the city’s history along the way.
You can see several major landmarks, walk along the river, grab something casual to eat, and get a feel for the city without rushing from one attraction to the next.
If you have a full day or several days, obviously you can add much more to your Zurich itinerary.
We didn’t check off every Zurich attraction during our few hours in the city, but that wasn’t really the point. We walked, explored, ate an absurd amount of grocery-store food, and watched the city go about its evening.
There are plenty of other sights I hope to see the next time I’m here. We barely scratched the surface!
